Shooting in the dark. It can drive a person nuts - er - crazy. (Drive
you away from nuts - and all other foods, really).

Trouble is, it may not be just foods. Depending on where you live and
what your other circumstances are, there might be inhalants, etc,
triggering symptoms. For example, it's the end of ragweed season for
many of us, but not yet at a hard frost. And since the most recent
season is/was ragweed, cross-reactive foods such as melons could be
triggering symptoms now that they didn't trigger some other time of year.

And there are molds due to decaying leaves. And then there's the
problem of turning dormant heating systems and displacing the dust
from the ducts. And the list goes on. New pets? Pets spending more
time indoors due to the weather? New fragrances? New formulas for soaps, etc.

The possibilities can drive a person nuts.

If you're sure it's food, and you're not sure which one(s), you can
try a nearly infinite number of combinations - take out all yeasts;
take out all wheat; take out both; ... You could starve yourself,
too. If you're game, and you know how to do it without nutritionally
compromising yourself, you could try a "nothing" diet. A very small
set of the foods least likely to trigger symptoms (are there any,
really?). If you get better, you could just return to your "regular"
diet and see if symptoms return. If so, you could start a "hunt" -
back to the "nothing diet," adding back one ingredient at a time,
watching for a return of symptoms. It might be a single ingredient; a
family of ingredients; more than one(!); who knows? Very tedious.
Very taxing. And only worth it if the symptoms are so annoying,
debilitating, or harmful that it's worth the effort. It was for our
son and his severe eczema. And it worked for him. We learned what he
could and could not eat - to keep him comfortable and more rash-free.
