As a hospital dietitian and wife/daughter-in-law of two wonderful
celiacs I was hurt by this statement:
10. If staying in the hospital overnight, work with the dietician prior
to surgery. If possible have food brought in from home to be safe as
the hospital dieticians don't have a clue.
I known not all hospital dietitians are familiar with celiac disease
(please do not take the time to email me your hospital horror
story--after working in many hospitals I believe it) but stereotyping
and put-downs are not the way to increase dietitians knowledge. Since
just like almost all medical professionals they too need more than a
couple hours education during the course of years of study regarding
celiac disease.
I know I wished for more knowledge regarding celiac disease when my
husband came home from the doctor's office with his diagnosis but that
night I pulled out my college textbooks and started a process that has
led me to become very knowledgeable and through my profession I am proud
to say I have helped many celiacs. Too bad you can't all have surgery
at my hospital.
