Try these patches at

wn&searchType=all&chkWord=1
I've had them work with computer brands other than Gateway to finally solve
the notorious Win98 shutdown hang.
Hope it helps.....

Subject: win98 shutdown problem
> Hi,
> A friend has a celeron 1.2 gig with 256 meg ram running win98se. Following
a recent hdd failure they bought a 40 gig seagate drive. Initially all
worked ok. But after installing the drivers for canon printer, a scanner
and a a40 digital camera the machine will proceed to the "Windows is
shutting down" screen and stays there. This happens during shutdown or
restart (which is a pain when loading software). We have downloaded and
installed a patch for windows shutdown problems from Microsoft but that has
not changed anything. Reloaded windows and still no fix. I have heard that
reinstalling windows from a boot disk is better but am not sure what this
would do to existing installations.
> Can anyone provide any assistance. We want to avoid a reformat and redo
if at all possible.
