Try this and see if it helps.USB tend to create a lot of ghost ports for
what ever reason. I had something similar happen and this is what I did:

With all you usb items hooked up in the port location where they will stay,
reboot the machine into safe mode. Open the device manager and remove all
usb ports and the items connected to them - the scanner, printer, mouse,
card reader, etc. Close device manager and reboot the machine.as you
normally would. Windows should find everything and reinstall it. When I was
running 2 mice (PS2 and USB) I had to do this to get the USB one to funtion
properly.
