G'Day All,
Just read "Necessary Illusions" via the Chomsky Archive on the 'Net.
I found it an excellent presentation of his 'Propaganda Model' of the US
Media with
an excellent case study of US Media coverage of the Sandinista government in
comparison to the murderous US sponsored terror states of the region.
Just to remove a speck from NC's eye...
In "Necessary Illusions" NC claims that a statement made by a certain US
official when banning imports of Niaraguan coffee is racist. The statement
(to paraphrase) is
"The coffee is rejected because it retains its Nicaraguan
characteristics".
I don't think the statement by the US official is racist.
I think its a statement motivated by power politics considerations not at
all
related to race. In the same way that the US does not care if its aid
dollars go
to governments that practice torture or not, so the US does not care from
what country
it derives its imports, or what race the citizens of the originating country
are.
The coffee was banned as an act of economic warfare against Nicaragua as a
small part of
an effort to overthrow the Sandinista govt. in order to retain total control
over
the political and economic policies of Nicaragua and Central America as a
whole.
Race was irrelevant in the coffee decision.
Power was all that mattered.
NC has probably read so much racist literature in the US archives that he
sees it
sometimes even when it isn't there.
Great book, though!
Cheers and Merry Christmas!
Craig
