[Kofi Annan] Winds Up African Tour In Cameroon

Yaounde, Cameroon (PANA) - UN secretary general Kofi Annan
Tuesday received an honorary doctorate degree in international
relations from the University of Cameroon in recognition of his
"immense contribution to the promotion of world peace and
understanding."

Annan arrived in Yaounde Monday night to wind up an African
tour that has already taken him to Senegal, Gambia, Gabon and
Central African Republic.

He is expected to hold talks with the prime minister and foreign
minister Tuesday before being hosted at a state banquet by
President Paul Biya, according to the official programme of his visit.

Annan leaves Wednesday for New York via Switzerland.

WELCOME Mr. KOFI ANNAN

United Nations Secretary General KOFI ANNAN and his wife
arived in Yaounde Yesterday evening at Yaounde-Nsimalen
International Airport on invitation of President Paul BIYA.
The welcome was organised in the Presidential lounge terminal
with the second personality of the excutive branch, Prime Minister
and Head of Government Peter MAFANY MUSONGE doing the
welcome civilities. President BIYA - for whom this visit is most
important and who would want to use the occasion of the visit
to publicly express Cameroon's tribute to a meritorious African
son - wanted the visit to be so.

President BIYA's "Pelican" Boeing 737 which brought in the
august visitor touched down at about 6.20 pm. At 6.30, the UN
scribe dressed in a deep navy blue suit accompanied by his wife,
Nane alighted from the aircraft. The couple was greeted as they
stepped down by Prime Minister MUSONGE and his wife Anne.

The two men then moved into one of the lounges of the
presidential terminal where they conversed briefly. In an adjacent
room Mrs. ANNAN an Mrs MUSONGE also held a brief
discussions before the guests started off the 20 kilometre journey
to the down town Hilton wher they will be during their Yaounde sojourn.

UN Secretary General today meets the minister of State for
External Relations and Prime Minister. The day's high points
come at midday when he meets President BIYA and later in the
evening when the latter hosts a state luncheon for him.

An important moment also comes up  this afternoon when the
university of Younde II honours the world's chief diplomat with
the award of an honorary doctorate degree in international
Relations in recognition for his immense contribution to the
promotion of world peace and understanding.

On the sidelines, Mrs Nane ANNAN will visit the children's
ward of the Yaounde Central Hospital, a women's promotion
centre in the Tsinga neighbourhood and an art gallely run by
Benedictan monks in the Mont Febe Quarter of the city.

State house had arranged the visit of the United Nations
Secretary General Kofi ANNAN with the greatest attention,
ensuring that the welcome ceremony had all the trappings of
a presidential reception.
