A computer that is running slow can be the result of many things as
mentioned. The number of programs that you have running at one time is
the biggest memory hog. Everything you do and run on your pc/laptop
takes a share of that machines memory. One suggestion made was a very
good one about the msconfig if you are running windows 95/98. Just
select 'start' - 'run' and type in 'msconfig'. The window that comes up
will have several tabs so select the 'start up' tab. This will show you
what is being started at boot up of windows. I do not know what you use
so I can only make suggestions. Programs such as Real Player, Quicktime,
AOL, instant messengers, etc. do not need to be started at windows boot.
Take the check out of programs such as these. Do not take any checks out
of programs you do not know/recognize or any scanner programs
particularly if you use JAWS or a JAWS like program. By removing the
checks you are not removing the program. You are simply stopping that
program from automatically starting up at windows boot. These programs
will work as needed.

Maintenance should be done on a regular weekly basis. You can set up
your machine to do this automatically or do it manually when every you
want. Make sure that the maintenance includes scan disk, disk clean up
and defrag.

Another thing that will cause your machine to take forever to load
windows is the amount of folders you have on your desktop. If you have
allot of folders on your desktop then it is going to take a long time
for windows to load. Remove the icons from your desktop (those that you
can do without) and you will boot quicker. By removing the icon from
your desktop you are not removing the program. It is still there in your
programs menu.

A note to Doreen. You are getting a new ISP so there is nothing you need
to do with your address book. Once you have the new ISP in place simply
go to account settings in Outlook and change the incoming/outgoing mail
servers to your new ISP. Your address book only has email addresses in
it and those will not change.
