I am writing to remind you of the African Film Festival which begins this
evening, June 22, at 7 p.m. (sharp) in 4070 Vilas Hall on  campus. Vilas
Hall is located at the corner of Park Street and University Avenue.

Tonight's film is TABLEAU FERRAILLE (1997) by the Senegalese film-maker
Moussa Sene Absa.

On June 29, next Thursday, at the same time and place, LE FRANC and LA
PETITE VENDEUSE DE SOLEIL will be shown to honor the memory of their
director, the late Djibril Diop Mambety of Senegal.


On July 6, PIECES D'IDENTITE by Mweze Ngagura (Congo-Kinshasa). This film
won the top prize at the 1999 FESPACO festival, the Etalon de Yennenga

On July 13, LA VIE SUR TERRE by Abderrhmane Sisssako (Mali).

The films are part of a class I am teaching this summer on African cinema
whose theme is "local images, local knowledge."  They were selected in part
because of their recency, and  because they show how local realities are
connected (or not) to the global. They are all multilingual (Wolof, Bamana,
French, etc.) with English subtitles. My hope is that as many of you as
possible will attend and help with the discussion.
