Oats seems to be the topic here these days and one person claiming to be
sensitive to gluten along with a son w/celiac states they have no reaction
to McCann's Irish Oats. Out of curiosity, I went to McCann's website and
their FAQ states that:
"Are McCann's Oat products gluten free?
All McCann's oats are processed in a dedicated oatmeal mill. In the supply
chain, there is a possible cross contamination with other grains but we
would reckon that the admix is less than 0.05%.
We do manufacture a range of gluten free flour and bread mixes so we do have
some expertise in this area. As a result, we cannot guarantee that McCann's
oats are totally gluten free and we recommend that consumers use their own
judgement as to whether they wish to use the oatmeal or not."
Well, I did a little math and worked out that if their oats contained .05%
of an admix of other grains, that would work out to 500 PPM. Depending on
the grains, that would make it well beyond the Codex Alimentarius
recommendation. Perhaps a dietician can make more sense out of this than I.
But, it tells me that I should stay away from oats. Whether I have no
reaction to it or just _some_.
