Adel,
I am an OT working in the emerging practice area of self-advocacy and
self-determination for people with developmental disabilities.  Our project
is called STIR (Steps Toward Independence and Responsibility) and we are a
team comprised of people with and without developmental disabilities that
helps people with DD and their supports learn about advocacy and
self-determination.  We are a project of the Center for Development and
Learning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  We provide
training for free in NC (through a contract with the DD Section of the NC
Division of MH/DD/SAS).  Visit our website at www.self-advocate.org  In
addition, we received a grant through the Administration on Developmental
Disabilities for a project called Shifting the Power which will bring our
training to 10 other States over the next 3 years.  This year the states/US
Territories that were chosen based on their applications are Hawaii and
America Samoa.

In NC there are 4 Self-Determination pilot sites that are each providing
voluntary participants with the services of a fiscal intermediary and a
support broker.  If you would like more information about the pilot projects

I recently completed the training to become a Circle of Friend's
facilitator.  The mission of Circles, to help a person wiht a disability
realize a dream or reach life goals fits very well with my philosophy as an
OT.  I am currently a member of 1 circle and will be joining another for a
co-worker starting next month.

Dear Meira,

Actually I was wondering if anyone had been to a person directed planning
meeting or is in a circle of support.  I was also interested in how
different
states/agencies handle funding and where OT fits into that funding stream.
Our county is trying to move from a "slot based" system to individual
budgets
where consumers and their circles of support manage the funds.

What are your experiences?
