Regarding my statement that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs Prilosec and
Prevacid) do not cause rebound, whoopee, once again I get to say I'm wrong :)
Someone on the just sent me an URL of a paper on PPIs that seems to
demonstrate that they do cause rebound after "long usage." Now the
literature I'd read said only that they do not cause rebound after 8 weeks
of use. And doctors H. L. Waldum and E. Brenna in this new article
recommend that patients not be kept on such PPIs for "long periods" of time
(without specifying what a long period of time is). My understanding is
that PPIs are typically and most properly used for 30 days (sometimes 60
days) to heal the esophagus. I never thought they should be used
indefinitely. I've used Prevacid twice for 30 days at a time to heal the
esophagus when it gets sensitive and raw from the acid. Then I quit it and
use Zantac, only when needed.
Also, I do think I should mention here that bloating and burping after
eating are NOT symptoms of acidity or reflux. Au Contraire Messeur Pussy
Cat, if you have these after EVERY meal they are more likely to be symptoms
of too little acid, and in this case you should definitely not be taking
anything to decrease the amount of acid you have. If you have these
symptoms just now and then it's more likely to be a food intolerance, so
you are just having the symptoms when you ingest that particular food. Of
course these are the symptoms that can be so much fun in crowded theaters
:) -vance
