Dear fellow list members:

I received a good number of emails from list members.

Many had encountered incidents of people claiming their
products or services could "cure" their Celiac disorder.

Please note that I do feel holistic medicine, homeopathy, and other
alternative therapies have their place. I practice Yoga twice
a day for Fibromyalgia pain and stress relief, meditation, etc.
Accupuncture and other approaches help many people with many
conditions.

However, these approaches are not a "cure" for Celiac Sprue. One list
member said that a holistic MD could cure Celiac Sprue with homeopathy,
and she is going to one - and she is certain he can do this because he
helped her mother recover from a stroke.

Recovering from a stroke is unrelated to having the genes for
Celiac Sprue. The genes will always be there. She will probably
resume eating gluten after treatment by this holistic MD. Since
there is no real cure, that will put her at 100 times normal risk for
lymphomas again, and at possible risk for triggering many
other autoimmune disorders. I consider her advice, that a
holistic MD can cure Celiac Sprue, to be dangerous advice.

One list member said that gene therapy for this may be available in as
little as 10 years. That would be great! Only problem is, our
insurance companies may not pay for it for another 10 years beyond
that. I'll stick with a GF diet until that day comes, thank you.

Dangerous advice that listmates have encountered included doctors who
have prescribed pills with gluten, doctors who said it is OK to eat a
little gluten, and various kinds of professionals who claim they can
"cure" Celiac Sprue. Also non-professionals trying to market a
product or service. One person had a chiropractor say he could cure
Celiac Sprue with allergy shots!

All of these people want money, of course.

I had a great email from list member Kim, who encountered a
nutritionist who knew nothing about Celiac Sprue or the GF diet,
and wanted to charge plenty for the time involved in learning about
it. Kim had a GREAT comeback for this nutritionist: She told the
nutritionist what HER (Kim's) fee would be for spending two hours
education the nutritionist about Celiac Sprue!

Have a great weekend, everyone - and delicious GF eating.

I'm making salmon patties tonight.

Vicki
