Having gotten all my education as a blind person before ADA and having
worked at four universities (three before ADA), I agree that much has been
done but much remains to be done. The parts remaining are the less visible
pieces, I believe, like accomodating the needs of staff members with
disabilities, the providing of training for adaptive equipment provided,
etc. Until people with disabilities rise to the level of being
decision-makers, or at least a majority on committees that advise
decision-makers (are we talking glass ceiling here?), I think the less
obvious accomodations will come slowly. Those of us with disabilities
employed by universities will continue to be in the position to advocate
both for our own needs and the needs of fellow employees and students with
less visible needs and less power to know and use the channels. Allies are
always welcome!
