Here's are the responses on candy canes. Thanks, everybody!

*************

From what I understand, the problem with candy canes is that
manufacturers sometimes dust the canes with flour to keep them from
sticking to the belts or packaging. In this case, they do not declare
it as an ingredient because it is not IN the candy cane. Two candy
canes that I know of that are GF:Candy canes made by Spangler (their web
site FAQ has gluten information)and Hershey's Mint Chocolate Candy Canes
(I called them 11/30/01 to confirm this. They said that Hershey's will
always include the gluten-containing ingredient in their ingredient list
even if it is only used for processing or packaging. Their number: 800-
468-1714). I have heard that there are other GF candy canes but have
not personally confirmed any others. I bought a box of GF candy canes
in November and when my daughter is offered an unknown candy cane we
just switch it for the GF ones. She also brings one to school so she
can have it if a teacher gives out candy canes. Of course, she is 11
and is better at dealing with this issue than someone younger.

Not all candy canes are created equally. I got some from Asher Candy
Co. in New Hyde Park, NY which list ingredients as: sugar, corn syrup,
natural flavor, red 40 and red 46 lake. I ate one and I was OK. I have
seen some candy canes which list "confectionary glaze" as an
ingredients. I believe this may be flour based, as I read something to
this effect on the list a while back. I once had a bad reaction from
eat Also, some candy is produced on a belt which may be floured to
prevent sticking. If it is a large company, such as Brach's, you can
always call to ask about their production. I have found many companies
to be understanding of our need to be sure.

I buy Spangler candy canes. I wouldn't trust the ones given out with no
brand name. I have heard some could have a wheat flour coating on them.

Not sure whether all candy canes are GF but,
Bob's candy canes are
