the fact is that this has little to do with the disabled. it is
possible in many cases to have an internet connection for a low price
and in many cases, it can be accessed in the local library. I for one
agree with the ceo who said "they are like the bad drunks you need to
kick out of the bar". This is not the disabled that he is talking
about but those who because something is free or cheap will abuse it.
It seems that there is some sort of ratio of mentality when it comes
to cost. If something has to be payed for from a college degree to
internet access, it yeilds more respect from the populous who frequent
it. Take housing for example. Those who were given warm, dry, clean,
comfortable affordable housing in areas which could be independantly
cheaply travelled some how in large part tore it down, made rubbish
out of it and turned it into a place no one wanted to live in. I
agree that some will suffer because of the action here but I also know
that it will ultimately be a good thing because there are many people
out there for whom internet access is not yet a reality and those free
services actually thwarted in some ways competition for lowering the
price. For many of the disabled of whom you speak for instance, there
are things like web tv and phone services that they can utilize.
There is soon coming a service albiet with a fairly high price tag
that employs a set top box that the blind can use. In the coming
years, we will see internet access for basic purposes drop for the
masses because the business model will demand it. This however, will
mean that you will have to pay for some services that are now
considered free and we are already starting to see that happen.
