Thanks for the suggestion.  Yes, I have tried vga mode.
Exact same symptom --- everything proceeds normally
until the first flash of the graphics-mode screen, and then
a near-instant blue screen.

I'm thinking now about swapping the memory again, but
for another brand, and am looking for brand / configuration
suggestions that people have had luck with with the
abit-ka7 board.
