If your control panel is accessable, check for the existence of an
additional modem control applet, something like a HSP control. This is sure
evidence of a software "Winmodem". If at all possible, find your system
administrator to see if the software installation CD or floppy exists, then
go to the add/remove program applet and try to remove this modem software.
The Admin might have to physically take the modem out to identify it and
download the software if it is not correct. Before you junk the modem, try
reinstalling the software, then reboot and see if this fixes everything.
Another possability: The modem was installed after the backup image was
done on your drive. This could be the reason a image restoration did not
fix the problem. Uninstall and reinstall will usually fix this too. I bet
youŽll find you had a corrupted file/installation. A follow up on Jim
Hodges: Here in Brazil, it seems they use PcTels exclusively. I frequently
have to disable them with a jumper on the motherboard before installing a
new model. I find they are very unreliable and exibit the same symptoms
Adam Lloyd describes in his system.
