First, what happened that you had to reset the BIOS (what BIOS, what mobo)?
Next, what did you do, just reset it to defaults? Finally, what OS do you
have. You say you "tried to reinstall the software" for the modem driver.
Does that mean you tried and you could not install it? In device manager
does the modem have a yellow exclamation point next to it. You might try
booting into safe mode and removing the ethernet card and the modem, and
doing a restart so you can reinstall both (if the ethernet card does not
show up in safe mode, you need to physically remove it, shut down, and
physically reinstall it before you reboot). Before you do that I would
suggest you go to the manufacturer's web site for both the card and modem to
download the latest driver updates (these are both small files you can copy
to a floppy from your laptop). Also check that the ethernet card is
properly inserted in the PCI slot. The modem is external? I ask because
you say you have your laptop connected to it. How did you ping with an
Ethernet card that does not show up in device manager? Does the modem show
up in Device manager? Do you know what the BIOS settings were before you
reset them? You may have disabled the port for the modem when you reset the
BIOS (you'll need to know what port it's installed to). I don't think you
need to send it to HP, but you need to give us all more info.

Hello all, I have a 1 ghz hp that i had to reset the
BIOS and now the computer and my cable modem (road
runner) can not see each other. I know the cable modem
works, i have my lap top hooked up to it. The computer
has a built in ethernet card I know the ethernet card
is working because i was able to ping. The ethernet
card is not showing up in device manager, its a
Realtek, and i have done the add/remove hardware, and
tried to reinstall the software for the drivers (it's
on a recovery disk from HP). The only help HP had was
to send it in, they went through the ping, and
recovery disk.....I don't want to send it in, I think
we can repair it, i need ideas!
