You really need to check the user's manual for your drive. My Plextor
8X4X32 manual states that it MUST be the master on the channel. In my
original configuration I had a Zip drive as the master and the CD-ROM as the
slave. I had to reset the Zip drive as a slave to the CD-RW. In my first
try Win 98 wouldn't even recognize it with the Zip drive as a master (I
hadn't read the manual at that point). You absolutely have to read your
user's manual to see how it should be connected. What works on someone
else's system isn't always going to work on yours. The most logical setup
will probably be CD-RW master, CD-ROM slave on one cable to your secondary
channel (but again, read the manual), and your one hard drive set up as a
solo on your primary channel on a cable by itself.

Generally speaking, put the HD on the primary master,
the CD-Rom on the secondary master,
the CD-RW as the secondary slave.

Turn off ultra ata 66 or 100 on the secondary port.
(Or set it to Auto.)

DMA on the secondary, and Auto Insert Notification is
determined by the version of your burning software, if
Roxio or Adaptec.

Be careful to have a system back-up if putting Roxio v5
on W2K, (there are special instructions and a critical
5.01 Roxio patch), and leave out TakeTwo (and DCD?).

What would be the optimum configuration for 1-hard drive, 1-cdrom drive, and
1-cdrw drive? Which should be primary slave, secondary
master...etc. for optimum speed in copying/burning CDs?
