It took a little while, but I was able to track down the proximate date of
the profile: Winter 2001. Here a link to the page where DeVany's profile is
mentioned:

In the profile itself a book is indeed mentioned: "He's writing a book on
his concepts about "evolutionary fitness," prescribing randomness and
variety in both diet and physical activity". Ha!

Another interesting snippet:

"People magazine came to talk to the professor about his latest project, a
diet and physical-fitness regimen based on hunter-gatherer patterns that he
calls "evolutionary fitness."

Anybody know what the date of that issue of People was?
