In Calif. some parents of people in state institutions got together and said
they wanted their kids to have other options. They wanted their kids in
smaller places, like group homes, or living independently. the Lanterman act
was passed in 1976, and 19 regional centers were formed to cover people with
developmental disabilities. RC oversees the funding of service providers, and
offers case management and referrals.
