I still use Pine too- (great to meet a fellow stick-in-the-mud, BTW!) -but
I have an updated version that renders most (though not all) HTML that I
get.  I do agree that posts to listservs should be plain text in general
and should give you a plain text option when you subscribe.  I've noted
that with some versions of Pine, including at least one older than what I
have, if you forward the html message (or pretend you are going to) it
gets rendered.

OR as long as you are using job control (mine has to use pine -z, I have
it aliased that way) you could export to a tempfile, go ctrl-z and
lynx tempfile to see it quickly.  Hope you have a good lynx, it is still
really handy, IMHO!
