My students have been scanning material using Kurzweil to create MP3 files.
It is not too difficult and the kids are in control of what they hear/study.

When a file is open, go to File, Utilities, Create MP3 files and press
enter.  That is about it.  If you would like to have another speech engine
read, be sure to pick it before creating MP3 creation.  After creating the
files, I have the kids transfer the files to a CD and they use a Victor
reader to read it.  There is both a software and a hardware version of
Victor. The software version allows for additional features like annotating
information with a microphone...

Another feature I am just as impressed with about Kurzweil is the send to
feature.  With a document open, you can choose send to.  From here, one can
chose to send the file in different formats to different devices.  For
example, one could send a file to a Voice note in Word for mat through a
serial port.  Or one could translate the file into grade 2 braille out a
port to a Braille lite...  One of the devices is a Road Runner which I
unfortunately did not get a chance to work with.
