Once, a long time ago, I set up two computers (win98), two NIC's, with a crossover cable, (no hub), and was able to share an internet connection. Now I am trying to do the same thing in a different location using two computers running win Me and an external 56k modem.
I went through the networking wizard, choosing "Internet connection sharing" on both pc's. Both pc's are on the network and can share files. The Host can dial up and surf the net.
I can not get the client to share the internet connection.
I have gone through Microsofts trouble shooters but have not been successfull. I did find the following bit of information:
"If you will be using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to enable other computers on your home network to share an Internet connection, your ICS host computer will require two network adapters, and therefore, two available slots or ports. "
I only have one NIC in the host ( the cat 5 cable is connected to it). Why do I need another one? What do I connect to the other NIC?
Another bit from the help files:
"Your external traditional modem is connected to the computer that will be the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) host. Install a network adapter in each computer to be added to the network. Plug the cable from each additional computer into the network hub.
This connects the computer acting as the ICS host with all other computers on your network."
The clerk at my local pc store says I can not share an Internet connection on a network with out getting a "Router". I will get one if it is needed but I don't understand why I didn't need one before.
