Error message on Windows 2000 when attempting program install

Message is:  "Filenamexxx\System\CurrentControlSet\VirtualDeviceDrivers. VDD. VirtualDeviceDriver format in the registry is invalid. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."  I can choose Close or Ignore. I always choose Ignore which allows for program to install successfully.  I have reinstalled Windows 2000 and all the patches but this error message seems impervious to correction.  Any ideas?  This error only noted occasionally by the way, it doesn't always appear.  Appreciate the insights.  Thanks.  HLB
