One of the things that I've had to hang a PC during Windows installation is
the Internal or L2 cache being enabled during the install. As a matter of
routine, I now disable the internal cache in the BIOS before a Windows
install and then re-enable after installation and all the re-boots are
completed. Something to try and it may not be related to the hard drive
size.
