Jabou,
Very few of the confiscated voters cards ended up in opposition hands. One
or two individuals felt scared and/or guilty I presume, after warnings from
the Senegalese Govt. and handed them over to the Opposition before polling
day; one of which was used by Femi Peters to get the IEC to change their
earlier ruling concerning those eligible to vote. Of course he later reversed
his position at the eleventh hour. The ones that are are being confiscated
by the Senegalese army will be difficult to obtain without going through
some
diplomatic channels; if Wade's Govt. wants to help, there is nothing
stopping him from sharing that information with the rest of the
international community, including the Commonwealth Secretariat. Maybe the
State Dept. can contact the Senegalese using diplomatic channels to obtain
the information.
On the ground, meanwhile, the elections results become more of a joke with
every passing day. I understand there are new revelations and further
evidence of voter fraud. There is a piece on the L by one Janet Manneh
entitled 'being there' which sums up the general feeling in the country.
People feel cheated of yet another election by Jammeh.
Opposition and others are also trying to gather proof that some staff
members of the IEC were bribed D500,000 to announce the late change in the
rules which although Roberts refused to announce on TV personally for fear
of becoming even more discredited than he already was up to that point, but
he did not prevent his staff from going ahead either with the announcement;
he is an accessory to whatever transpired in those final hours.
