It is unusual that one has to announce a birth and a death in the
same message. Early in the morning on May 5, Lucy Mkandawire gave
birth to a healthy baby boy named Tafika-Kenan Joshua ("tafika" is
Chichewa for "we have arrived). Just four days later, on Thursday,
May 9, Lucy received word of her mother's passing. Lucy, who is from
Malawi, just joined UW-Madison as a graduate student in Nursing at
the beginning of this semester in January. Lucy can be reached at
