A TWO-DAY, INTENSIVE WORKSHOP ON "RACIAL HEALING" will be presented
in Madison by Reginald Newkirk and Nathan Rutstein of the Institute
for the Healing of Racism, Boston.

WHEN: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6
(registrants must commit to attending the full training on both
days)

WHERE: at the Madison Labor Temple, 1602 S. Park St., Madison

Limited to first 40 participants, multicultural group. Very
intensive
program will deal with racial healing of people from all
racial/ethnic
backgrounds, emotional and psychological aspects of racial healing
within a multicultural context.

If interested in participating, please contact us by Friday, March
16. Local contact persons for more information: Prof. Richard Davis
of
the University of Wisconsin (255-6666) or [log in to unmask];
Leila Pine of the Latino Workers Project (233-5566) or
[log in to unmask]

ENDORSEMENTS INCLUDE: Communities United, LUChA, Coalition of Black
Trade Unionists, Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, South
Central Federation of Labor, and others. Not affiliated with any
political group or religious body.

All are welcome, but we especially need more people of Latino, Asian
or Native American decent to join the first group of 40. Once we
train
local people to be facilitators, we hope to offer these workshops
several times a year, with the local Institute serving as a
springboard for social action.

COSTS: We are doing fundraising to raise the $8,000 needed in
advance, so the two-day workshop will be offered free of charge to
all
participants. Other costs: There is a $37 charge for two books
(Racial Healing, to be read before the workshop, and Coming of Age
at
the Millenium, to be read after.) There will be a charge for a
catered
lunch (perhaps $8-10 per day). Scholarships are available for
low-income individuals--call Richard Davis for details.

CONTENT: Those who have participated in these workshops describe
the
intense bonding that occurs and how "you can see the lightbulbs being

turned on in people's heads." The Institute for Racial Healing has
two goals: 1) For the participant to become involved in the process
of healing himself or herself, in order to become a healer of racism
in his or her community, and 2) For the participant to become a
force
for unity within that community. The workshop includes: fully
understanding how racism came about in this country; understanding
the
pathology of racism and how it impacts all of us; creating an
atmosphere of trust where honest discussion of feelings and emotions
can occur in a respectful manner; establishing an ongoing mechanism
for healing whereby participants come together on an equal basis,
committed to helping one another heal our wounds of racism in a
safe,
nonconfrontational environment; and engaging in social action.
