Sudan Wins Amid Bottle-Throwing

Fans threw bottles as Sudan won 2-0 at Sierra Leone in a World Cup qualifier
Saturday, and Ivory Coast won 2-1 at Congo Democratic Republic as fans
shouted, ''We will kill the referee!''
At Freetown, Sierra Leone President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah left the Group B game
when fans tossed bottles during the first half. Play was held up for about
five minutes midway through the first half when Sudan's Said Gned collapsed
on the field and was taken by ambulance to a hospital.
James Joseph and Khalid Bakit scored Sudan's two goals one minute apart
during first-half injury time.
Liberia and Sudan (both 3-1) lead Group B with nine points, three ahead of
group favorite Nigeria (2-1), six ahead of Ghana and nine ahead of Sierra
Leone (0-4). The five African group winners qualify for the 2002 tournament
in Japan and South Korea.
In other games, Zambia beat Libya 2-0 in Group A and Senegal routed Zambia
4-0 in Group C.
In Kinshasa, Guel Tchiressoua scored in the 17th minute and Ibrahim Bakayoko
in the 45th for Ivory Coast, and Papy Kimoto scored in the final minute for
the home team.
Congolese fans shouted ''We will kill the referee!'' at the end of the game,
and Ivory Coast players remained on the field until police dispersed the
crowd.
Tunisia (3-0-1) leads Group D with 10 points, three ahead of Ivory Coast
(2-0-1), seven ahead of Madagascar (1-2) and Congo Democratic Republic (1-3)
and 10 ahead of Congo (0-2).
At Chingola, Jones Mwewa scored on a sixth-minute header and Charles Lota
scored in the 21st to lead Zambia over visiting Libya.
Cameroon (4-0) leads Group A with 12 points, six ahead of Zambia (2-2) and
Angola (2-1). Togo (0-2-1) and Libya (0-3-1) have one point each.
At Dakar, El Hadj Diouf scored three goals to lead Senegal over visiting
Namibia. He converted a penalty kick in the 22nd minute, then scored in the
46th and 52nd minutes. Henry Camara added a goal in the 63rd.
Senegal and Morocco (both 1-0-3) have six points, but Senegal took over the
Group C lead on goal difference. They are two points ahead of Algeria
(1-1-1), three ahead of Egypt (0-0-3) and four ahead of Namibia (0-2-2).
Sunday's schedule has Angola (2-0-1) at Togo (0-2-1) in Group A, Nigeria at
Ghana in Group B, Algeria at Egypt in Group C and Malawi at Zimbabwe in
Group E.
Madagascar's Group D game at Congo this weekend was canceled when the home
team withdrew from qualifying. Guinea's Group E game at South Africa was
canceled when FIFA suspended the visiting team because its soccer officials
were fired by the government.
