If the display isn't physically damaged - cracked
the backlight may be burned out or the controller for it might be bad.
Backlights are a slim florescent bulb running across the top of the LCD and
aren't that expensive.
You may need to take it to a laptop repair shop and have them test the
lcd/backlight.
You can probably pick up a new working LCD or a whole laptop on Ebay for
cheap.
