Kay;
check the shiny silver bar that runs the width of the printer that
the print cartridge carriage slides on. If it is at all dirty/sticky, clean
it carefully with a paper towel.
you can use a small amount of rubbing alcohol applied to the towel to clean
it.
A very small amount of sewing machine type oil or teflon or silicon
lubricant spray can be applied. Be very
careful not to get any on the mylar strip that runs across behind that bar.
I usually just dab a bit on the towel and wipe the bar down with it.
HP will advise against using any lube, but I've done this for years and got
more
service out of many HP printers that were ready to be scrapped.
You don't have much to loose if the printer won't work anyway.
The "garbage" being printed is usually a sign of the wrong driver.
uninstall then reinstall with the latest drivers for you operating system.
