With the following caveats, getting an ordinary, hardware, internal
modem to work isn't that big of a deal under GNU/Linux. PPP works
well out of the box in the Debian distribution, and I assume also
under other dists.
That being said, I have had a lot of trouble with a USR hardware PCI
modem---I did get it to work (on P5B but not A7V-133 motherboards).
This was a plug-n-play modem, and I assume the trouble may have been
with interrupts.
Modems have been one of the easier things to get working. I am
considering an external modem, however, because of trouble I had w/
the PCI modem.
