We recently returned from a trip to St. Croix, where, among other things, we
toured the Cruzan Rum Factory. Rum is made from molasses and yeast and is
gluten free. However, our guide told us that they get the barrels that they
age the rum in from the U.S. They are barrels that were previously used by
a whisky manufacturer, who uses them just once. Since the barrels are still
usable, the Cruzan Rum Factory buys them and uses them six more times before
they are recycled into planters and such.

So, if you find that you have an unexpected reaction to rum, or perhaps
other alcoholic beverages that are supposed to be gf, perhaps it is coming
from gluten that is being absorbed from the aging barrels.

Disclaimer: I have no idea if gluten can actually be absorbed this way. I
am just offering this as a possible cause for a frustrating unexplained
reaction.
