I have the same problem you do. What helps for me are
a couple of things (borrowed from AA, I might add, who
else knows compulsion better than an alcoholic?)
First, I don't have to not eat chocolate (my downfall)
forever - I only have to not eat it one day at a time.
So, just for today, I didn't have any chocolate.
The second one is that 1 piece of chocolate is too
much and 1000 pieces are not enough. I only need to
avoid eating that first piece of chocolate (or
whatever), then no craving, no bingeing.
I don't always do this, but it sure does make a big
difference when I do. I don't feel as deprived or
guilty. It is a great feeling to go to bed at night
knowing that I did not succumb to chocolate's siren
song.
