On Tuesday, February 10, 2003, at 7:00pm, Joya Mosley, Milwaukee's
first
enrollee in Cuba's program of providing free medical education to US
students, will report on her experiences. The Latin American School of
Medicine offers free medical school education to students from Africa,
Latin
America, and the US who promise to return to their countries and
provide
medical care in underserved communities. Dr. James Jolin of Waukesha
will
also report on his visit to the school, the Cuban medical system, and
how
the school's graduates can be admitted to practice here.
The event will take place at Milwaukee's Central United Methodist
Church, 639 N. 25th St., at Wisconsin Ave. The presentation is open to
the public, with off street parking just south of the church. Donations
will be accepted for transportation and related expenses, to assist
Milwaukee students in this
program.
The medical school program for U.S. students was set up as a result of
a
visit by members of the U.S. Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) to Cuba
in the year 2000, which was organized by Rev. Lucius Walker, a Black
Baptist
Minister who was a leader in Milwaukee's civil rights movement in the
early
1960's. Rev. Walker now ministers in Harlem, where Cuban President
Fidel
Castro announced later in 2000 that Cuba would cover all expenses for
up to 500 African-American, minority and poor students from the US. The
only
stipulation is that the students return to their communities to
provide
health care to the most underserved populations in the U.S.
Cuba has the most advanced education system in Latin America, and a
free
universal healthcare system, which has resulted in life expectancy
equal to
that of the U.S. at a small fraction of the cost. Its low rates of
infant
mortality rival that of the US, and are much lower than that for
minority
populations in the US, including in Milwaukee. Its medical education
has
been praised by leading international bodies.
U.S. students may apply and receive further information through the
Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization (IFCO) and Pastors
for
Peace, at www.ifconews.org (212) 926-5757. Local information on the
Milwaukee presentation, as well as on the medical school program is
