Sustainable and Organic Agriculture in Cuba:
Rural Farms,Urban Gardens
January 7-17, 2004
A Witness for Peace delegation, organized by Community Action on Latin
America, Madison WI
In these times of increased agribusiness consolidation and power in the
US and worldwide, Cuba offers a unique alternative. Cuba exists in stark
contrast to the chemical-dependent, corporate-controlled farming we see
elsewhere. During the "special period" after the fall of the Soviet
Union, Cuba embarked on a nationwide experiment in sustainable
agriculture unparalleled in the world. The combination of organic
gardens, soil conservation, and biological pest control may well have
created a living model for how the rest of the world could function if
the environmental and
health costs of our current system are ever fully acknowledged. This
delegation will travel to both rural and urban areas to examine the
modes, methods, and reality of the Cuban agricultural system, plus the
role of the US embargo and the "global" economy in agricultural
production and food security. Visit organic farms, urban gardens,
produce markets, rural co-ops, farmers and government officials. And we
will certainly not miss out on the bigger picture. We'll also learn
about Cuban health care, education, and culture, by meeting face-to-face
with the warm and friendly people of this often misunderstood island
neighbor.
Cost
Approximately $1075.00. This includes 9 days of meals, accommodations,
facilitation, translation, training and
transportation in Cuba. We can help you with fundraising ideas.
Applicants needing financial assistance have a very successful track
record of raising the needed funds. (Airfare not included, estimated
$700.)
APPLICATION DEADLINE: October 1, 2003, filled on a first-come,
first-served basis, subject to approval.
License Witness for Peace delegations to Cuba are licensed through the
U.S. Department of Treasury. Travel to Cuba with WFP is fully legal for
U.S. citizens. A WFP travel agent will assist delegates with travel
