Habib Iddrisu, Master Drummer and Dancer From Ghana, West Africa

        Habib Iddrisu, an outstanding young musician and dancer from Ghana,
West Africa, will be in Madison, Wisconsin, from August 14 through August
24.  While in Madison, he will give a concert in Mills Concert Hall of the
Humanities Building on Sunday, August 16, 7:30 p.m., teach drumming and
dance classes at MetroDance, perform at the Mango Grill with the band Kweku
Ananse and the Sweet Vibrations on Wednesday, August 19, 10:00 p.m., and
perform as part of  the African Fest on Saturday, August 22, 10:00
a.m.-6:00 p.m.

Habib's Schedule:

Concert, Sunday, August 16, 7:30 p.m., Mills Concert Hall, Humanties
Building, 455 N. Park St. (corner of Park St. and University Ave.),
Madison, free and open to the public.

Drumming and Dance Classes, Monday, August 17, through Friday, August 21,
drumming, 4:00-6:00 p.m., dancing, 6:30-8:30 pm., MetroDance, 3009
University Ave., Madison, $15 per class or $60 for the entire week.

Performance with the band Kweku Ananse and the Sweet Vibrations, Wednesday,
August 19, 10:00 p.m., Mango Grill, University Square Mall (between
University Ave. and Johnson St. by Lake St.), $6 at the door.

Performance as part of the Africa Fest '98, Saturday, Ausgust 22, 10:00
a.m.-6:00 p.m., Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center, 1 John
Nolan Drive, Madison, free and open to the public.


        Habib Iddrisu is a engaging and energetic performer.  He is a
master drummer, playing many kinds of African drums in many styles of
music. These drums include dondon (talking drum), djembe, brekete,
atumpani, and frontomfrom.  Styles of music and dance that he is
accomplished in include Kpanlogo, Gome, Agbadza, and Bawa.  He also plays
the gyile (African xylophone) and atenteben (bamboo flute).
        Habib is on the staff of the University of Ghana, is master drummer
and choreographer for Abibigroma, resident theater company of the
University of Ghana,  and is the artistic director of the Norvisi and
Bomkasa dance companies in Accra.  He has performed throughout the United
States, Europe, as well as in Ghana and other African countries.  He
performed for President Rawlings of Ghana and President Clinton of the
United States this year in Ghana.  He received the best dancer of Ghana
award in 1992.  He has worked with some of West Africa's top musicians such
as Kwadjo Antwi, Mustapha Tetteh Addy, Patrick Okine and Ras Kimono.
        Habib lives in Accra, Ghana.  His home town is Tamale, Ghana.  He
is the grandson of Mangoli-Lana (the Chief's drummer) Adam Alassani.
        Habib was artist in residence at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison Dance Program from September through December 1995.
During that time, he gave concerts, taught classes, and made many friends.
        Habib is currently in residence at the American Dance Festival in
North Carolina.  He will be performing and teaching classes in Berkeley,
California before coming to Madison.
        Habib's visit to Madison and performances are sponsored by the
University of Wisconsin-Madison African Studies Program, Dance Program, and
School of Music.
