That's why I think your problem is a bigger one. Windows should
automatically install the standard VGA driver which would put the Display
adapter line back in Device Manager. At that point you could "update the
driver". If Windows is not installing the standard VGA something is wrong.
Are you now getting to "safe mode", or does it freeze up before that?
Please say where the boot freezes.
When display drivers were deleted in Device Mgr, no Display Adapter line
remained. Therefore, could not "update driver" as suggested. Add New
Hardware not work in Safe Mode.

Following MS troubleshooting procedure, deleted display drivers in Device
Mgr, Win98. Computer freezes in Startup before it gets to installing new
display driver. Cannot install driver in Safe Mode. How install driver?
Demetri Kolokotronis
Hi,
When in Safe Mode, install the generic VGA 16 color driver, this should
work with ANY video card. (It is what windows uses when starting in safe
mode, but select it as the one to use always).
To do this, go into device manager, then choose display adapter,
properties, Driver Tab....then click "update driver", and click the dot
next
to "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location....", and click
"next". Then click the dot next to "Show All Hardware", and click next.
Then
under Manufacturers, choose (Standard Display Types) at the top of the
list,
and under Models, choose Standard Display Adapter (VGA), and click
next...then OK to finish.....
Using that driver, it should boot in normal mode, and you can install
the
proper driver from there....
