If the village idiot may chime in. I had been given the impression that the
term "Dutchman" loosely referred to whomever the hell he was (little Dutch
boy) plugging a hole in the dike - as Dutchmen were used to fill lacunae in
stone work. Growing up near the land of the "Pennsylvania Dutch" one learned
early that it was an obliteration of Pennsylvania Deutsch(sp?) referring to
German.
