UW-Madison General Library System
Project (Graduate) Assistant Vacancy [50% Position]
College Library


The General Library System is seeking applications for one 50% project 
(graduate) assistant in the College Library.

APPOINTMENT DATES:  August 15, 2001 - June 30, 2002.  This position does 
not confer tenure nor does it lead to a tenure appointment.  Reappointment 
is at the discretion of the Director and is subject to satisfactory job 
performance and budget considerations.

ELIGIBILITY:  Applicants must be enrolled in or have a valid permit to 
register in a UW-Madison graduate degree program.  Successful candidates 
must provide the necessary work authorizations, if applicable.

BEGINNING SALARY: $27,676 (based on full time annual rate)

BENEFITS:  Health insurance, vacation, paid State holidays and sick leave 
as covered by the terms of the current Teaching Assistant/Project Assistant 
Bargaining Contract.

HOURS:  20 hours a week, including a combination of one or more evenings 
until midnight, one or two evenings until 9:30 p.m. and Saturday or Sunday 
hours.

POSITION SUMMARY:  LIBRARY INFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGY SERVICES ASSISTANT
Primary responsibilities:
·       Provide reference service, including online reference, for 
undergraduate students and other users of the College Library.
·       General supervision of student assistant staff in the 
Reserves/Circulation and Computer/Media service areas.
·       General responsibility for the library on weekends.

Other responsibilities as assigned, which may include:
·       Develop web pages for library services or web-based help and 
tutorials for MadCat and library databases.
·       Develop subject guides for undergraduates, highlighting library and 
Internet resources.
·       Train patrons, student assistants and staff in the use of 
databases, software, and equipment.
·       Assist in providing technical support for installation and 
maintenance of computer equipment.
·       Assist in providing technical support for public service multimedia 
equipment.

REQUIREMENTS:
·       Previous library reference services experience or relevant course 
work in the School of Library and Information Science.
·       Knowledge of campus library resources, including 
MadCat.  Experience with electronic database searching.
·       Good interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

DESIRED:
·       Experience, course work or career plans in the field of library and 
information science.
·       Experience and/or course work in library public service functions, 
especially circulation and media services.
·       Experience with Internet resources.
·       Experience in training and supervision.
·       Knowledge of html and web development tools such as Dreamweaver, 
PhotoShop, and Flash.
·       Knowledge and/or experience with computers and software.
