Dear Friends,
I just wanted to let you know that, if you enjoyed the Andy Palacio and
the Punta Rock Souljahs performance at last year's Africa Fest, the
Punta Rock Explosion is returning to Madison THIS SATURDAY, AUGUST 26
at the Crystal Corner Bar, 1302 Williamson St.
This year, however, the QUEEN OF PUNTA ROCK, PAULA CASTILLO, from the
Afro-Caribbean coast of Guatemala will be headlining, and she is
bringing along 10 of the most seasoned Afro-Guatemalan Garifuna
musicians in New York City, THE INTERNATIONAL GARIFUNA BAND WITH OMAR
"BABAKLE" SUAZO.
Punta Rock is the distinctively sweet afro-caribbean dance music of the
Garifuna people, whose ancestors arrived in the Caribbean 360 years ago
on a slave ship which capsized in a storm. Survivors swam to nearby St.
Vincent where they were never enslaved and intermarried with the Carib
and Arawak Indians. Today their culture, language, spirituality and
music greatly reflect their west african and Indian roots. They even
speak an african dialect as their first language!
So please don't miss this opportunity to experience the culture and
music of the Garifuna people right here in Madison. You'll be dancing
from the very first song!

See you there!
Sincerely,
Laurie Mlatawou, host of "Panafrica" on WORT 89.9FM, Madison's Community
Radio Station
