Quilombo is a mythical tale of Zumbi of Palmares, the leader of  the first
group of Maroons (former enslaved Africans who created their own
communities), in Brazil.

5:30 pm Bahia, Africa in the Americas  (60 min.)

7 pm    Daughters of the Dust
Daughters of the Dust is the story of a family migrating from their home in
the Geechee islands to the mainland.  Connecting the generations, and
linking the visible and the invisible world, the film depicts the ways in
which African traditions are maintained and passed down.

will host a reading by Kathleen Hill, whose travel memoir of her
experiences of famine and healing in Niger, has recently been published in
paperback (Northwestern University Press).

An Unusual International Evening,  March 16, 4 p.m. at the Madison Civic
Center.  Sponsored by UW-Madison's European Union Center and African
Studies program and the Department of Public Instruction. Keynote speaker
Willy Helin, Head of Press and Public Affairs of the European Commission
Delegation to the U.S.; Cherif Ayouba Correa, African Languages and
Literature, will present "African Music: The Common Language of a
Continent." Musical performance "Mandinka Epic" by the Ballet d'Afrique
Noire. Tickets for dinner and the performance are $36 and include both

CONFERENCE

Call for Papers/Presentations"  April 8, 2000, Technology and Culture:
Knowledge Across Borders (KAB) is a forum organized  by The Ontario Council
for International Cooperation (OCIC).  The Forum will be held on April 8,
2000. OCIC is seeking abstracts for papers and presentations addressing issues
 concerning the politics and processes of technolog(ies) and culture(s).
Representation is encouraged from, but not limited to, Latin America and
the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia, and from diverse analyses. For further

FELLOWSHIPS

The National African Language Resource Center Summer 2000 Institute will
help prepare African language educators in the areas of program
development, coordination and evaluation and curriculum and material
development and evaluation for graduate students and teaching assistants
who are planning to pursue African language teaching as a profession.
African language scholars who are interested in professional development
are also encouraged to participate in the institute.   A three-week
training program from June 19-July 7, 2000 covers travel expenses to and
from Madison, room and board, a $1,000 stipend and a NALRC certificate of
completion awarded  at the end of the program.

A letter of application and supporting documents for the summer 2000
institute should be submitted by March 15, 2000 to Antonia Folarin

The Scott Kloeck-Jenson International Pre-Dissertation Travel Grant
