UW-Madison, DPI sponsor evening of international diversity

UW-Madison's European Union Center and African Studies program and the Department of Public Instruction are planning a unique evening of international diversity. The activities will feature a discussion of recent events in Europe, a dance performance of the Ballet d'Afrique Noire at the Madison Civic Center, and keynote speaker Willy Helin, Head of Press and Public Affairs of the European Commission Delegation to the U.S.

The events are scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m., March 16, at the Madison Civic Center.

Willy Helin will begin the evening with his presentation on recent developments in "Brave New Europe" in the Civic Center's Marquee Room. Helin, who began his career as a journalist with the Belgian News Agency "Belga," also has been the spokesman for several European Commissioners. The Commission delegation functions like an embassy in its dealings with the U.S. government.

Following that presentation will be UW-Madison Department of African Languages and Literature Ph.D. candidate Cherif Ayouba Correa, from Rufisque, Senegal. The title of his presentation is "African Music: The Common Language of a Continent." Correa, who has family origins in the Mandinka ethnic group of Senegal and Mali, received his Masters Degree in English, African, British, American literature and general linguistics from the University of Saint-Louis, Senegal.

There also will be a performance of the "Mandinka Epic" by the Ballet d'Afrique Noire, a Senegalese company of 30 dancers, singers, and musicians bringing alive a legend of the Mandinka people of western Africa. The "Mandinka Epic" has been passed down through the centuries by Mandinkan griots and celebrates the new discoveries in the ancient civilization of Mali.

Tickets for dinner and the performance are $36 and include both speakers. For ticket information, call the European Union Center at (608) 262-5590.

For more information about UW-Madison's International Institute, contact Ronnie Hess at (608) 262-5590.

Thank you, azc.
