Oh, Christy, I'm so sorry about your ankle and hopeful that you will be able
to enjoy your wonderful trip.
I've taken care of a lot of horse ankle injuries and, from what I hear, the
treatment is very similar for humans: first two days use ice packs; next
three days use heat pads. The doctor should be able to prescrible a
prescription med cream that will help it heal.
Poultices are helpful: comfrey is one. You might call an herbal specialist
to find out what poultices they recommend.
A lot of athletes use Arnica cream or ointment. Arnica comes from a flower
and is very helpful in relieving pain of this type. I would buy enough of
it for use on the entire trip. It will stay on until you take it off with
soap/water.
Best wishes for a really speedy recovery,
Kath
