Cheat Sheet for the Yaesu VX5RThis is a "cheat sheet" for the Yaesu VX5R. I received thinformation from Ken Rossi, N6MSJ, over the telephone. I do notown the radio, but I went over all the details thoroughly with Ken. He has just recently bought the radio so only the basics will becovered so you can get started. Here is a brief description of the radio with its buttons andknobs. On the very top of the radio from left to right are:antenna; volume; tuning knob.Three vertical buttons above the keypad from bottom to top are:function; lamp; on/off.Keypad:top row: band; 1; 2; 3; star; Second row: reverse 4; 5; 6; 0; Third row: power setting; 7; 8; 9; pound; Note: the 0,, star and pound buttons are on the right side. The P T T button is on the top left side of the radio. It has twodots.Underneath the P T T button is squelch. To program a frequency in memory, follow these steps: 1. Enter the entire frequency using the keypad. For example:146730. The radio will automatically switch to the correct band.2. Press function.3. Press the number 1 on the keypad.4. Press band.5. Turn tuning knob to the right one click.6. Press band.7. Turn tuning knob to the correct P L. Turning the knob to theright is for a higher P L. Turning the knob to the left lowers theP L frequency. (The factory default p l is 88.5).8. Press band.9. Press P T T. Transmit your call sign to make sure you have therepeater. If everything is correct, go to the next step.10. Hold function until the radio beeps twice. Press functionagain to save the frequency in memory.Note: The radio will automatically jump to the next blank channel. If you have channel 1 programmed, the next time you save afrequency it will go to channel 2.To recall a memory channel, follow these steps:1. Press the memory channel number using the keypad then press thestar button. You can also use the tuning knob to go from one memory channel toanother. You will hear a beep when you get to channel 1.Note: You can enter frequencies any time you want to withoutpressing the V F O button, which, by the way, is the pound button. Because of this feature, you can set your frequencies and P L tonesvery easily. For example, suppose you have 146730 programmed inchannel 1 with a P L of 88.5. You plan to travel and you want touse the same frequency with a different P L. Just go to memory 1and change the P L. You can always know what P L tone is displayedby programming all frequencies from a memory channel. Example: Youhave 146730 in channel 1. You want to program the 146.91 repeaterwhich uses the same tone. Just change the frequency and leave thetone setting alone because it already displays 88.5.At this time, Ken is not able to send any written email but if youhave RealAudio, he can send you a voice email.
