I agree with you Larry.  I hold an Extra class license and although I know
that others around me would not object to me serving as a v e, I would not
be doing my fare share of the verification work unless I had someone with me
to perform the visual functions of the v e's job.  If I had to have some one
serve as my eyes to do an adequate job, then I believe that person would
really become the surrogate v e and I would just be sitting there as a
figure head.  I have much more important things to do than be a figure head
unable to perform the job independently.  I would only offer my services as
a v e if the local area didn't have enough extra class v e's.  I would not
want to stand in the way of a person wanting to become a new ham.
