What can be causing this?

My laptop seems to be getting progressively sluggish. When I'm working on
the Internet, or with my voice mail program, there is between a 1 second
and a 4 second response time following my pressing a key.

The Window Eyes program has never been completely snappy, accurate and
consistent, but it seems to be drowsy, now.

What could be causing this system to be slowing??

And what can I do about it?

Between the spam and my slow computer, half of my computer time is turning
into a chore, and a big drag.
