I am reasonably sure that I have fixed my problem.
In desperation, I replaced my new Nvidia video card
with the original  TridentBlade 3D 9880 card and so far
evervthing is working is working like a charm.
When my fan was acting up, the actions of the computer
were so erratic that I tried everythng, with bad results.
