If habitat destruction was the reason, then somehow humans couldn't change
african thoroughly enough. Stable enough against fire?
Are there enough natural fires to occur there?

As far as hunting is concerned.. there are (were) plenty elephants.
But the humans living there coexist with the elephants instead of
specializing in elephant steaks all day.

Elephants are lean. Mammoths were fat. I think that's the difference.
